This can be a great day trip from Samarkand. The drive is over a mountain and exciting for sure and their is sculpture park to climb on things and get some great pictures.
The most notable information about this city is that is the birthplace of Amir Timur and to visit Ak-Saray Palace. Ak-Saray was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.
Timur had desired to make this this the capital of his empire instead of Samarkand. It was 24 years to build and was completed shortly before his death.
If you are lucky you can get to go on top and see an incredible view.
The remaining of the complex has some shopping a maseoleum and the Amir Timur statue which is worth a visit. This is where I got my Doppa (the hat)
On the way back to Samarkand, stop at the hillside restaurant for lunch and make some new friends. It is a bit tough for vegetarians (I had bread and veggies), but otherwise the goat is amazing (I heard)
